Adjusting Lekku Empty Adjusting Lekku

So, I just received a new pair of lekku from Pam today. While my first pair I ordered fit like a glove, this set seem to have a bit too much packing on the top of the head area. Curious to hear of ideas of how to adjust without doing damage or removing too much.
Measuring ideas to adjust the foam packed inside? Or just pluck away? As I'll be fully painting this set and using for DragonCon next year... help would be greatly appreciated.
